תקציר:
A new novel by the author of “The Palace of the Drowned Woman”. Henri, who served as a gendarme in Algeria, fled the country at the outbreak of the war for independence and now works for distant relatives who are involved in some shady business. Louise, born in an unremarkable English village and dedicated to caring for her father, a disabled veteran of the Second World War, dreams of escaping from the wilderness into the big, beautiful world. Their paths cross in Spain, where Louise appropriates what Henri is obliged to return or else he will be in trouble. He sets out to chase her across Europe – from Granada to Paris, from Belgrade to Istanbul – but he cannot make a decisive move, and the endless game of cat and mouse goes on and on. Both must come to terms with their difficult pasts, learn each other’s secrets, and write the story of their own lives, abandoning the usual plots in which “bad” heroes necessarily deserve punishment.
